Third-party notices for Learnfaz The listening-evaluation engine (compiled to WebAssembly and shipped with this site) includes data and code derived from the works below, and the dictionary served under /_dict/ is adapted from English Wiktionary. Their notices are reproduced as their licences require, as kept in the Learnfaz repository under the path that heads each. ============================================================================== learnfaz-engine/src/data/en/NOTICE.md # Third-party data and code in the English pack `language/english/numbers.rs` is a port of Whisper's English number normalizer; its MIT notice is at the end of this file. Five tables in this directory are generated by `scripts/build_english_data.py` (`make engine-data`) from the sources below, at the pinned versions. Their notices are reproduced verbatim, as their licences require. | Table | Source | Version | |---|---|---| | `spellings.txt`, `inflections.txt`, `function_words.txt` | English Speller Database (ESDB, SCOWL v2), | release `rel-2026.02.25`, commit `7e99edab8e32f9f9ea2b15f249ca8d4d67237410` | | `contractions.txt` | ESDB (the contractions), expanded by Whisper's contraction rules | as above; Whisper as below | | `pronunciations.txt` | CMU Pronouncing Dictionary, | commit `74790861f652b15e4ac49015a90074ad62a27690` | `alternatives.json` is hand-kept. Its title abbreviations are Whisper's; every other entry, and the readings of `'s` and `'d` after a question word in `contractions.txt`, are facts checked against the Wiktionary entry named in the entry's `source`. No Wiktionary text is reproduced. The six fillers in `language/english.rs` (`hmm`, `mm`, `mhm`, `mmm`, `uh`, `um`) are the words Whisper's normalizer ignores. The word list uses ESDB size 60 with American and British spellings only, so the Australian (`=== AU`) and UK Advanced Cryptics Dictionary (`=== UKACD`, sizes above 80) notices do not apply. The lemma and spelling groups go beyond a plain word list, and ESDB says the WordNet notice might then apply, so it is included. ## ESDB ```text Copyright 2000-2026 by Kevin Atkinson Permission to use, copy, modify, distribute, and sell any part of SCOWLv2, or word lists created from it, is hereby granted without fee, provided that the above copyright notice appears in all copies and that both the above copyright notice and this notice appear in supporting documentation. SCOWL is derived from many sources, most of which are in the Public Domain. Data from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) was also used. All data from COCA comes from 3-gram data that is not freely available; however, the usage is within the rights given by the NDA that was signed when purchasing the data. More information on COCA is available at https://www.english-corpora.org/coca/. The primary source of words for SCOWL comes from 12dicts and ENABLE2K. Both are in the Public Domain, but Alan Beale deserves special credit as he is the author of 12dicts and a major contributor to ENABLE2K. In addition, he gave me an incredible amount of feedback and created a number of special lists in order to help improve the overall quality of SCOWL. ``` ## WordNet (as referenced by ESDB) ```text === WordNet WordNet was used to help with the initial POS assignment: This software and database is being provided to you, the LICENSEE, by Princeton University under the following license. Wiktextract turned Wiktionary's pages into structured records. From those records, this dictionary keeps only English entries with at least one definition and a letter or digit in their headword. Each entry keeps its headword, part of speech, definitions as Wiktionary writes them, their usage labels, and the definition a subsense belongs to. Translations are kept for these languages: es. They stay under the label Wiktionary gives the meaning they translate, with their notes and regional labels, in Wiktionary's order except that words native speakers almost never say in the sentences of Tatoeba come after the others (see below). Usage examples, quotations, pronunciations, etymologies, inflection tables, other languages and grammatical tags are left out, and the data is rewritten as compressed JSON split into alphabetical ranges.
